Traditionally sweet pongal is made with just jaggery rice and moong dal as main ingredients. I have already posted a sweet pongal recipe with milk but saw this traditional temple style sakkarai pongal recipe with only jaggery from a chettinad book my athai gave me. Sakarai pongal is generally prepared in temples as a prasadam. This is a famous dish during the pongal festival. No doubt, this recipe will feature in almost all of the tabrahm functions, festivals and all auspicious days!

Sakkarai Pongal / Sweet Pongal / Chakkara Pongal is a traditional South Indian sweet rice prepared during the harvest festival called Pongal / Sankranthi. In villages freshly harvested rice is cooked with jaggery and dal in clay earthenware pots and offered to God along with vegetables, lentils, sugarcane and fruits. This really is THE temple style sakkarai pongal! It tasted so divine that we finished it all up last night, which usually never happens with Sakkarai pongal. And the husband took one spoonful (he had no idea I was using this recipe) and exclaimed 'This tastes like the ones they give out in temple' 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing this recipe.
